Working with Design Unit Rules

A design unit rule maps a specific set of operational attribute values for a feature type to a particular design unit. Only one unit is associated with each rule. Because they are a form of metadata, design unit rules make it possible to search for units using attributes as search criteria.

Design unit rules are the basis for automatic unit assignment. If unit rules have been configured for a feature type, a unit can be automatically assigned when the feature is assigned. Units that match the default attribute values of the feature type are displayed in the design Unit Matches box on the Attributes page of the Placement Defaults dialog box . For more information about automatic unit assignment, see Pinning design Units to Feature Types in a Job Default.

Unit rules also drive the Matched CUs page of the Units Catalog in the Design Assistant (see Assigning Matched Units Manually to Features).

You can view all the existing design unit rules that have been configured for a particular feature type using the Design Unit Rule Editor.

Configuring Compatible Unit Rules

Unit rule tables are typically created and loaded into the database during implementation. The Compatible Unit Rule Editor lets you view the configured rules for particular feature types (see Viewing Compatible Unit Rules for Feature Types and Viewing Filtered Lists of Compatible Unit Rules).

Administrators and other users with configuration privileges can use the Compatible Unit Rule Editor to create, modify, and delete unit rules. For more information, see the separate Administrator's Guide.
